PRESS RELEASE: As if printed – yet digital: APHEUM introduces a new visual medium for rooms

Thanks to its specially developed Deep Grayscale technology, the APHEUM Frame delivers unique image quality for digital black and white art, presenting Digital Fine Art as a serene object in space.

Art photography, remembrance culture, and personal images are transformed into individually curatable series of images that unfold a visual dramaturgy over months and years.

Exclusive collaborations with MAGNUM PHOTOS and HALBE combine photographic authority with object quality, handcrafted in Germany.

Stuttgart, March 25, 2026 – There are images that are not just decoration, but convey an attitude: as a quiet presence in a room, as a memory, as a conversation starter. The APHEUM Frame creates a new medium for this – a digital original that gives time to black and white photography: curated, deep in tonal values, consciously reduced in its aesthetic. APHEUM combines digital flexibility with the calm, high-quality effect of printed art.

The APHEUM Frame is a design statement: a frame that doesn't demand attention, but enables it. As a quiet object, it integrates into living and working spaces, hotels, galleries, retail environments, or cultural venues. "With the APHEUM Frame, our goal was to create a true art object that restores importance to photography in everyday life – calmly and individually curated. We provide the certainty that work and memory endure in their original form," says Christopher Colshorn, founder and CEO of APHEUM.
Three content worlds for the room, iconic images from MAGNUM

The digital art object draws from three content worlds that can be used individually or combined: art photography as a curated collection of works that appear in the room like framed prints; remembrance culture as a respectful visibility of contemporary witness accounts, archives, and historical image collections; and personal images that don't disappear into folders, but become part of everyday life again as private image sequences.

Even at its launch, APHEUM was able to secure MAGNUM PHOTOS, one of the world's most renowned photo agencies, as an exclusive partner: Iconic black and white works by Eve Arnold, Robert Capa, Richard Kalvar, and Dennis Stock are thus made accessible as a curated edition. The works are exclusively available digitally via APHEUM and cannot otherwise be accessed on the internet.

"We were impressed by the quality of the APHEUM Frames, which successfully capture the essence of classic prints while leveraging the possibilities of digital visual art. With the 'Masters of Photography by MAGNUM PHOTOS' collection, we are providing access to the works of these renowned artists in an innovative format via APHEUM," says Alexandros Tsopotos, Head of Partnerships at MAGNUM.
Curation as a long-distance run: image programs instead of snapshots

APHEUM conceives photography as a story. Users themselves assemble image sequences and curate them over longer periods – up to two years in advance. Individual motifs become a dramaturgy that can be oriented towards seasons, travels, projects, or memorial days.

APHEUM provides context for the series of art photography and remembrance culture – measured and precise, as an in-depth exploration. Background information on the work, author, origin, and classification can – depending on the setting – be provided privately via email and/or publicly via QR codes. Especially in public spaces and cultural contexts, the image thus becomes the starting point for a second look, for conversation and orientation, without overwhelming the work with explanatory texts. Museums and
can show changing exhibitions with the APHEUM Frame – without any risk to sensitive originals. Important works remain visible and accessible, and their preservation is sustainably ensured. When using the frame with personal images, the user themselves is the living context.

The frame is exclusively handcrafted in Germany by HALBE: a manufacturer known in the fine art and exhibition world for precise, durable framing. APHEUM thus combines photographic authority with the aesthetic of an interior and cultural product. "We were immediately convinced by the concept of the APHEUM Frame. If an image is to remain for a long time, it needs framing that not only protects but also supports the impact of the work – precise, durable, and understated. That's what we stand for," says David Halbe, Managing Partner at HALBE-RAHMEN.

This effect is made possible by reflective e-paper under anti-reflective art glass: The image does not illuminate, but reflects ambient light – matte, glare-free, and pleasant to view. With the specially developed novel APHEUM Deep Grayscale technology, the finest tonal values become visible (up to 255 shades of gray), and an innovative optimization precisely adjusts contrast, tonal value, and sharpness to the medium. Content is provided centrally and secured server-side based on tokens to protect works, rights, and sensitive content.

Sustainable object quality and technology that stays in the background
A central concern of APHEUM is sustainability: The APHEUM Frame works with particularly energy-efficient technologies and only requires a battery change once a year. The frame works with simple, commercially available AAA batteries and deliberately avoids lithium-ion batteries – a significant advantage, especially in the business sector, as lithium-ion batteries can pose a fire hazard and thus represent an insurance risk. In addition, high-quality materials are used, guaranteeing a long service life and minimizing the ecological footprint.

APHEUM Frames are exclusively offered through direct sales to enable the highest quality at the lowest possible prices. The frame is available in three product variants: Currently for sale are the APHEUM Frame S with 9.7 inch E-Ink ePaper for 386 EUR and the APHEUM Frame M with 13.3 inch E-Ink ePaper for 768 EUR. The new APHEUM Frame L with 27.5 inch E-Ink ePaper can already be pre-ordered at an introductory price of 2348 EUR for the first 100 units.

All frames come with a free lifetime license for personal images. In addition to the iconic photographs from MAGNUM, collections by Mary-Ann Weber, Angèle E. Essamba, Jewgeni A. Chaldei, Karl-Heinz Mai, Katrin Laade, and Imagebroker are currently offered. All details can be found on the APHEUM website:
