About the collection

“Dignity in Focus” brings together 52 photographs by Angèle Etoundi Essamba. Her visual language portrays Black women with tenderness, dignity, and self-determination — beyond familiar stereotypes.

A gaze that makes dignity visible

At the heart of Angèle Etoundi Essamba’s work is the Black woman — as a giver of life, guardian of tradition, and bearer of memory. Gesture, silence, emotion, and strength become a visual language of their own.

Her photographs break with depictions of passivity or exoticism and replace them with pride, resilience, and self-determination.
